Correction: In 2006 the Nederlands Scheepvaart Museum in Amsterdam bought the pen painting from Koninklijk College Zeemanshoop in Amsterdam.

On the pen painting “De Vrijheid en andere schepen op de rede van Amsterdam” from Ludolf Backhuysen (Emden 1631-1708 Amsterdam), painted ca. 1660 ( Collection Koninklijk College Zeemanshoop, Amsterdam) you can see exactly the same mirror. So there is no doubt that Willem van de Velde, the elder painted “De Vrijheid” on The Dutch Fleet under Sail. Thank you for the kind words, DeVries. The appearance of the Vrijheid in this painting is puzzling. I took the description of this work from the book “Mirror of Empire” by George S. Keyes, who mentions that detailed paintings of these ships by Willem van de Velde can be found in the collection of the Museum Boymans – van Beuningen in Rotterdam. They could prove if the stern decorations of the ship in the right indeed belonged to the Vrijheid. Unfortunately the online collection of the museum does not include the mentioned works.

First of all my compliments for this website, what a great collection with interesting comments.

I have a question regarding this painting. According to the description, the “Vrijheid” is on the far right. From information I received from others, there was no “Vrijheid” participating in this battle (at least, it was not mentioned). The “Vrijheid” did however participate in the Four Days battle. Could you shed some light on this issue?
